Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH)

Each year, the Department of Defense (DoD) helps more than 900,000 military members and their families afford adequate housing through the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH). Totaling approximately $19 billion annually, these monthly military housing allowances are designed to equal the median rent, utility, and renter’s insurance costs for military members’ pay grades and family sizes in military housing areas across the country.

To ensure that these military housing allowances are accurate, fair, and reasonable, the DoD relies on our proven research process.

We are proud of our long-standing association—since the program’s inception in 1997—with the Basic Allowance for Housing program, as well as its relationships with the Defense Travel Management Office and with each branch of the Armed Forces.
