Runzheimer Awarded Two Consulting Contracts by NASA

November 10, 2004

Fleet Management Manual and Lease vs. Buy Projects Build on Previous Work

Runzheimer International, the Rochester, Wisconsin-based management consulting firm, was recently awarded two contracts to conduct vehicle fleet studies for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). One study will involve the development of a comprehensive fleet management policies and procedures manual. The other, to be performed for NASA's Langley Research Center, will help NASA determine when to lease versus purchase its vehicles and when to rent or buy vehicles for certain uses.

William Gookin, NASA's Manager of Transportation Programs, stated, "NASA is committed to developing world-class fleet management practices. Having the Runzheimer Team assist with these two projects will give us a tremendous boost forward and keep us on the leading edge of fleet management activity among federal agencies."

"These two important studies will build on previous fleet consulting work we have done for NASA," stated Larry Fredrich, Director of Government Services for Runzheimer and project manager for both projects. Fredrich added, "The fleet management manual work especially will serve as a model for other federal agencies to follow as they try to fully understand and standardize their fleet operations as well as save costs."

Federal fleets have come under increasing scrutiny lately. The General Accountability Office (GAO) of the federal government issued a report in July that criticized certain agencies for having too many vehicles and not enough controls over vehicle acquisition and usage, resulting in millions of dollars in excess costs to the government. National media have picked up on this study, helping to focus efforts on finding ways to improve federal fleet management and save taxpayers money.

Runzheimer's partner in these studies is Mercury Associates, Inc. (MAI), a Maryland-based fleet consulting small business. MAI has provided fleet consulting and related information technology services to hundreds of government agencies and private corporations.
