Fleet Management Studies to Benefit GSA and All Federal Agencies
Runzheimer International, the Rochester, Wisconsin-based management consulting firm, was recently awarded three contracts to conduct vehicle fleet projects for the General Services Administration (GSA) of the federal government. The studies will involve:
- The development of a comprehensive fleet management desk reference to be available on the web for use by all federal agencies.
- The creation of a vehicle allocation methodology to determine standard guidelines for vehicle acquisition and disposal.
- The development of a fleet training program for use in educating federal fleet managers about industry best practices and federal fleet regulations.
Russ Pentz, Director of GSA's Federal Vehicle Policy Division, stated, "GSA is committed to developing best-in-class fleet management practices both within our agency and across the federal government. We look forward to working with the Runzheimer Team and to implementing the results of their work as quickly as possible."
"These three important studies will provide a foundation for solid management of GSA's 800 vehicle fleet," stated Kraig Rodenbeck, Vice President of Government Services for Runzheimer and administrative manager for all three projects. Rodenbeck added, "This work will also provide tools for other federal agencies to use as they look for improvements and cost-savings in their fleet operations."
Federal fleets have come under increasing scrutiny lately. The General Accountability Office (GAO) of the federal government issued a report in July that criticized certain agencies for having too many vehicles and not enough controls over vehicle acquisition and usage, resulting in millions of dollars in excess costs to the government. National media have picked up on this study, helping to focus efforts on finding ways to improve federal fleet management and save taxpayers money.
Runzheimer's partner in these studies is Mercury Associates, Inc. (MAI), a Maryland-based fleet consulting small business. MAI has provided fleet consulting and related information technology services to hundreds of government agencies and private corporations.
