Business Travel

Contrary to the predictions of some, business travel has not slowed due to technological advances. Technology has eliminated the need for some business travel, but face-to-face meetings are still critical to an organization's success, and business travel volume continues to increase.  In many instances, the electronic advances forecasted to be the downfall of business travel have only enhanced workers’ productivity and time spent out of the office.  Organizations must strive for optimal use of business travel in order to meet objectives and to control costs.  Best practices in business travel indicate organizations should:

  • Maximize business within a city when business travel is required
  • Combine multiple business travel outings into a single, multi-city trip
  • Leverage the effectiveness and cost-savings of electronic conferencing when appropriate for client meetings and for intra-company meetings
  • Embrace virtual office technology and tools to maximize productivity when the employee is out of the office for business travel

The human element of face-to-face interaction will likely ensure the continued existence of business travel. With proper planning and implementation, organizations can trim non-essential business travel without sacrificing business relationships.
